Learning ASL: Lesson 05 - Reflection
My fifth ASL Lesson was about 26-minutes in video length. After pausing to review each word, my total time of today’s sitting was 38:38. I used the video lesson that is linked directly to the Lesson 5 category of this first unit in ASL University; I believe there might be slower paced videos available on Instructor Bill’s YouTube Channel.
I started this lesson during the school day as I anticipated I would not have time after school. In contrast to my last lesson I completed during the school day, I tried to finish this video in one period compared to multiple periods. It was difficult to refocus on the video when changing classes and environments last school-sitting. I was able to complete this lesson in one sitting effectively in the library~
In this lesson Instructor Bill introduced a new student, Claudia! Similar to Katelyn, Claudia seemed to naturally know certain words that were just introduced to the viewers of the video. Unlike Katelyn, Claudia did not seem to comprehend Instructor Bill’s signing as smoothly at different instances of the video. Claudia still did great learning throughout the lesson, certainly better than I would without the helpful subtitles of the video lessons and ability to pause each lesson and replay.
In this lesson, I learned the words: can, car, drive, church, computer, doctor, download, email, give, home, internet, in, out, movie, play, put, move, sit, stand, chair, stay, store, walk, watch, with, video, webcam, bus, drive to, give, wristwatch, watch, and train. As mentioned before, many words in ASL are very literal and practical movements that many people already use when they are talking without realizing they are inadvertently signing. This idea can be applied to direction-describing words such as, come, go, out, etc. Similarly mentioned before, a couple of the listed terms had variations of movements and multiple meanings depending on the context in which they are used in.
After today’s sitting, I think I will try to continue my lessons in school (I know I changed my mind again) during free blocks. Updates of my learnings will be posted tomorrow! Thank you for reading~
